High Bill, Meter Reading and Leak Checks
Find meter box
Usually toward the front of the property, near the street, and often in line with the main outside faucet.
Open carefully
Meter is usually in a concrete box marked “water.” Use a large screwdriver-type tool to lift the lid safely.
Read left to right
Lift cap, read number display left to right, and include the stationary zero.
Dial clue
For residential meters, each rotation of the large dial measures 10 gallons.
| If your meter reading is… | What it may mean | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Much higher than bill reading | Usage continued after the bill read date, or there may be a leak/large water use. | Check toilets, faucets, outside hoses, irrigation, and meter movement when water is off. |
| Much lower than bill reading | Possible read/billing issue or timing difference. | Call 870-862-6451 and ask for help determining the problem. |
| Still moving when all water is off | Possible hidden leak between meter and house or inside plumbing. | Turn off indoor/outdoor fixtures; read at 10-20 minute intervals. |
| Similar to bill reading | Bill may reflect actual household use. | Review outdoor use, guests, irrigation, toilet leak, water heater, and appliance use. |
Silent toilet test
- Add food coloring or dye tablet to toilet tank.
- Do not flush.
- Wait a few minutes.
- If color appears in the bowl, repair the leak.
Hidden leak check
- Turn off all indoor faucets.
- Turn off outdoor faucets and appliances.
- Read meter.
- Read again after 10-20 minutes.
- If it moves, a leak probably exists.
Conservation fact from EWU: a slow drip can waste as much as 170 gallons per day or 5,000 gallons per month. Check faucets, waterline connections, outdoor hoses, sprinklers, and toilets before assuming the bill is wrong.
