- Contact 803-642-7603 if you need assistance with reconnection status.
Why Aiken’s Winter Water Use Can Affect Your Sewer Bill
One of the most useful details for City of Aiken customers is how the sewer consumption charge is calculated.
Each May, the City recalculates the monthly sewer consumption average using water usage reflected on the February, March and April bills. Those bills generally represent actual usage during December, January and February.
What This Means for Your Household
- Extra water consumption during winter can increase the sewer average used for later billing periods.
- Inspect toilets, faucets and irrigation equipment before winter usage rises.
- Check bills issued in February, March and April for unusually high readings.
- Report a confirmed leak promptly and ask whether a sewer average adjustment is available.
High Water Bill After a Leak: Can You Get an Adjustment?
The City of Aiken has a leak allowance policy, but it is conditional and does not automatically erase the full bill.
| Customer | Potential Assistance |
|---|---|
| Resident age 62 or older | May qualify for a leak allowance after documenting repairs at the primary residence. |
| Other residential customer | May qualify when one billing cycle includes more than $500 in water charges and repair documentation is provided. |
| Business customer | Only the sewer portion may be considered for an adjustment. |
What to Do After Discovering a Leak
- Arrange for the leak to be repaired safely.
- Keep the plumber’s invoice, receipt or other repair documentation.
- Compare affected billing periods with normal consumption.
- Call the City billing office and request a review under the leak allowance policy.
- Ask whether the leak changed your sewer averaging calculation.
Adjustments are subject to City criteria and supervisor approval. The City does not reimburse plumber charges through its leak allowance policy.
Read the official billing FAQs for the published leak allowance conditions.
Report a Broken Water Main, Sewer Problem or Water Outage
After-Hours Water Emergency
Call 803-642-7620.
For urgent service problems after hours or during weekends.
When reporting a problem, provide the street address, type of issue, when it started and whether nearby properties are also affected. For a suspected main break, avoid the damaged area and follow instructions from the utility department.

Local Utility Bill Assistance in Aiken
If you are struggling to pay, contact the billing office before your due date. The City lists several community agencies whose assistance pledges may be accepted toward eligible utility balances.
| Local Agency | Contact |
|---|---|
| ACTS (Area Churches Together Serving) | 803-642-5919 |
| Aiken Barnwell Community Action | 803-648-6836 |
| Christ Central | 803-644-0705 |
| St. Mary’s | 803-642-3211 |
Assistance depends on the agency’s current funding and eligibility rules. If an approved pledge covers only part of the amount required for reconnection, the customer must pay the remaining required balance and fees.
