High Bill, Same Bill Every Month or Leak Check
Same bill for months?
PSL says bills may look the same because households often use similar water monthly and the City bills in thousand-gallon increments. Example: 1,900 gallons can show as 1,000 until remaining usage reaches the next thousand.
Running toilet
A running toilet can waste about a gallon of water in 30 seconds. PSL says the issue is often a faulty flapper or float and recommends a red flapper because it is longer-lasting and chlorine-resistant.
Drips add up
A faucet dripping once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. A showerhead dripping 10 times per minute can waste more than 500 gallons per year.
| Check | PSL practical step | What result means |
|---|---|---|
| 2-hour leak test | Turn off all taps and stop using water; get meter reading; wait about 2 hours; read meter again. | Different readings mean you likely have a leak. |
| Main house valve test | Repeat leak test after shutting off main house valve. | If usage still registers, problem may be in plumber’s line from meter to home. If not, problem is likely inside the home. |
| Meter reading | Open meter cover so meter face gets sun; display should light up; read like a vehicle odometer. | Useful when comparing bill usage and checking for movement during no-water-use period. |
| Vacation/seasonal absence | Consider meter lock-off before leaving for extended time. | Base facility charge remains; turn-on fee applies when service is restored. |
| Returning home | Run bathtub water about 5 minutes after long absence. | Flushes stagnant water through pipes. |

Water Quality, Lead and Hydrant Flushing
2025 Water Quality Report
The City’s 2025 Water Quality Report says the drinking water provided by Port St. Lucie Utility Systems continues to meet federal and state requirements.
Report phone: 772-873-6400
Where water comes from
The City’s water supply comes from two independent sources: the shallow aquifer and the deeper Floridan aquifer.
Lead concerns
If concerned about lead testing, the Water Quality Report says to contact Utility Systems at 772-873-6400. EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline: 800-426-4791.
| Concern | Official guidance / fact | User action |
|---|---|---|
| Lead in plumbing | Lead can come from materials/components in service lines and home plumbing. Utility provides high-quality water and removes lead pipes but cannot control all home plumbing materials. | Flush pipes before drinking; use certified lead-reduction filter if needed; call 772-873-6400 about testing. |
| Cross connection | Improper connections can allow polluted water or chemicals into the water system. Reclaimed water must not connect to household plumbing. | Do not make improper connections; call 772-873-6400 to learn how to protect drinking water. |
| Hydrant flushing | Flushing maintains water quality, color and clarity and verifies flow/pressure for firefighting. | If flushed water is discolored, shut it off and wait; if still discolored, run water to allow fresh water into home pipes. |
| Temporary discoloration | City says sediment during flushing may cause temporary discoloration and is not a health hazard. | Avoid excessive water use during flushing, including baths, washing machines and dishwashers. |
| Annual report | Water Quality Report provides potable water quality details and annual compliance information. | Use current report for test tables and official quality statements. |

Sewer Alarm, Grinder/STEP System and What Not to Flush
Sewer alarm sounding or flashing?
- Call 772-873-6400.
- If your neighbor’s alarm is sounding, also call.
- Press/silence the audio portion according to panel model, then call for service.
- Conserve water until the service call is answered.
- If power is off, grinder/STEP system will not operate.

- Often called grinder or STEP system.
- Includes 250-gallon tank, pump and float system.
- Requires power to operate.
- Utility maintains from rear of tank to wastewater treatment plant.
- Owner is responsible for house plumbing issues.
| Do not flush / drain | Why it matters | Better action |
|---|---|---|
| Wipes, paper towels, facial tissue, diapers | Can clog plumbing and sewer systems even if labeled flushable. | Trash only. |
| Grease, fats, oils, coffee grounds | FOG hardens in pipes and creates blockages/fatbergs. | Cool, contain and trash; do not pour down drain. |
| Medication, chemicals, paints, solvents | Can disrupt treatment and pollute water systems. | Use proper disposal collection routes. |
| Syringes, needles, sharps | Safety hazard for workers and sewer systems. | Use approved sharps disposal. |
Official sewer education:
Storm, Power Outage and Boil-Water Prep
Power outage: city water
City water customers should not lose water solely because power is out; water treatment facilities run on generator power.
Power outage: grinder/STEP sewer
Low-pressure wastewater disposal systems need electricity. Conserve water during outage so the tank does not fill quickly.
Boil-water trigger
If distribution system pressure drops below 20 psi during a storm, a precautionary boil-water notice is issued.
| Storm situation | PSL utility guidance | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Power outage + grinder/STEP | Wastewater cannot be pumped out of the tank without power. | Only flush when necessary; avoid long showers, dishwasher and washing machine. |
| Portable generator | Generator may power residential grinder/STEP system, but direct connection to grinder electrical panel is prohibited. | Use licensed electrician and proper equipment through home electrical panel; guide states personal generator minimum 220V/6,500W. |
| Boil-water notice and unable to boil | Florida Department of Health guidance in the PSL guide: 8 drops unscented bleach per gallon, stir, wait 10 minutes before consuming. | Follow current official notice and health department directions. |
| Before storm | PSL suggests filling containers with tap water to avoid long lines and save money. | Store clean drinking water before storm arrives. |
