When Is a Sioux Falls Water Bill Due?
Sioux Falls reads water meters and generates bills monthly. The bill is due 21 days after the billing date.
Most meters are read remotely. If the city cannot obtain an actual reading, it may calculate an estimated bill and mark the statement accordingly.
Can You Change Your Billing Due Date?
Yes, in limited circumstances. The city allows customers to request a due date on either the 10th or 30th of the month. Changing the due date also changes the billing date.
Call 605-367-8131 to ask whether the change is available for your account.
How Is Water Consumption Measured?
Sioux Falls measures billed usage in CCF, which means 100 cubic feet of water.
1 CCF = approximately 748 gallons.
For example, 8 CCF on your bill represents approximately 5,984 gallons of water. Compare the number of CCF units on recent statements to understand changes in consumption.

How to Start, Transfer or Stop Water Service
Sioux Falls Utilities directs customers to contact the Utility Billing Office at 605-367-8131 to start, transfer or end service.
Starting Service at a New Address
- Call 605-367-8131 during customer service hours.
- Provide the new Sioux Falls service address and requested activation date.
- Confirm whether you are the property owner or a tenant.
- Ask what personal verification is required to establish the account.
- Review the $27 nonrefundable new account fee.
- If renting, arrange the applicable residential deposit, currently $87.
- Confirm the appointment or service activation requirements with Utility Billing.
Does Someone Need to Be Home?
Normally, an adult must be present when the city turns on water service because an open faucet or plumbing problem could cause flooding.
If nobody can be home, the city offers a Water Service Connection Waiver authorizing water restoration without an adult present. The waiver also releases the city from certain liability associated with the turn-on.
Find the waiver through the official Pay a Utility Bill page.
Stopping Service Before Moving Out
- Contact Utility Billing before your planned move-out date.
- Provide the service address and account details.
- Request a final service date.
- Provide a forwarding mailing address if requested.
- Confirm whether a remaining deposit will be credited to the final statement.
- Keep a record of the stop-service request.
Water Disconnected for Nonpayment? How to Restore Service
If you received a final disconnection notice, contact Utility Billing immediately. A past-due balance is due immediately even when the latest statement shows a later due date for new charges.
Steps for Reconnection
- Call Utility Billing: 605-367-8131.
- Confirm the amount owed: Ask for the delinquent balance and all applicable collection and reconnection fees.
- Arrange payment: Follow the billing office’s instructions for an account already disconnected.
- Pay before the same-day deadline: The city requires payment before 5 PM for same-business-day restoration eligibility.
- Arrange an adult at the property: Have someone present for the water turn-on, or complete the city’s Water Service Connection Waiver.
- Confirm restoration: Ask the office whether any additional appointment or account action is required.
Can You Make Payment Arrangements?
Possibly. The city’s Utility Billing Office can review payment arrangement eligibility based on account status, payment history and other circumstances.
If you cannot pay your full bill, call 605-367-8131 before the disconnection date. The city also introduced FlexPay options in its 2026 payment-system upgrade, allowing eligible customers to split certain payments into two or three smaller installments.
Do not assume enrollment in a payment plan automatically cancels an existing disconnection notice. Confirm your account’s status directly with Utility Billing.
High Water Bill? Check Usage and Possible Leaks
OneMeter lets customers compare consumption with previous periods, temperature and rainfall. This is especially helpful during the summer when lawn irrigation can increase usage.
Check Your Bill in Four Steps
- Log in to OneMeter.
- Compare the current month’s CCF usage with earlier months.
- Look for unusual changes related to irrigation, household occupancy or plumbing repairs.
- Check toilets, outdoor faucets, irrigation valves and other possible leaks.
If the statement shows an estimated meter reading, contact Utility Billing and ask whether the automatic meter-reading equipment needs service. The city says repair of its automatic reading equipment is provided without charge.
Can Sioux Falls Adjust a Bill After a Leak?
Sometimes. Customers are generally responsible for metered water consumption, but the city may consider an adjustment when a significant leak pushes usage into a higher billing tier or when documented water use did not enter the sanitary sewer system.
Call 605-367-8131 with the billing period, repair details and supporting documentation. Approval depends on the city’s review.
Sioux Falls Lawn Watering Restrictions
Sioux Falls maintains a year-round lawn watering program. The city may move between restriction stages depending on river flow and water demand.
Under the Stage 1 rules published by the city:
- Even-numbered addresses: Water lawns on even-numbered calendar dates.
- Odd-numbered addresses: Water lawns on odd-numbered calendar dates.
- Restricted hours: Lawn watering is not allowed from noon to 5 PM.
- Hand watering: Certain vegetation may be watered at other times using a nonleaking hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle.
Check the official lawn watering schedule and current restrictions.
