Start Service at a New Address
- Open Charlotte Water Start/Stop Service.
- Choose CLTWaterHub or call 704-336-7600 between 7 AM and 7 PM on a weekday.
- Provide the exact service address and requested start date.
- Prepare the identification information required for the selected application method. The utility lists SSN or employer EIN requirements for telephone requests.
- Complete the verification process and confirm any new-service fee.
- Make sure all indoor faucets and plumbing fixtures are closed before the technician attempts activation.

High Water Bill, Leaks and Water Outages in Charlotte
If your bill suddenly increases, check the water consumption shown on the bill before assuming the rise is caused only by rate changes.
- Compare current and previous Ccf readings.
- Check for running toilets and dripping faucets.
- Inspect irrigation controllers, outdoor hose connections and sprinkler heads.
- Look for persistent wet ground or unusual water flow.
- Check whether the current billing period contains more days than the previous one.
Can You Receive a Leak Adjustment?
Charlotte Water has a leak adjustment policy for eligible accounts. The adjustment depends on whether the leak occurred on the city’s side of the meter or on private plumbing.
Public-Side Leak
Leaks involving certain city-owned meter components may qualify for adjustment of 100% of excess water and sewer usage above the account’s average consumption.
Private-Side Leak
For qualifying private leaks, the policy generally provides adjustment of 50% of excess water usage and an applicable sewer adjustment, depending on whether the lost water entered the sewer system.
Documentation, eligibility conditions and the type of repair matter. Review Charlotte Water’s leak adjustment policy before requesting a credit.
Report a Water Main Break or Sewer Overflow
Call 704-336-7600 or 311, available for water and sewer emergency dispatch 24 hours a day. After business hours, follow the automated prompts for a water or sewer emergency.
If your neighborhood loses water, check for a notice at the property and visit the official troubleshooting and outage guidance.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Water Service: Important Local Details
Water Service and Stormwater Charges Are Different
A Charlotte utility statement may include water, wastewater and stormwater-related charges. Stormwater fees support drainage and runoff infrastructure and should not be confused with drinking water consumption charges.
Seasonal Outdoor Water Use
Charlotte Water uses increasing residential water-rate tiers. Households with automatic irrigation systems should check outdoor watering schedules, leaks and local water restrictions before increasing usage.
Current restriction notice: Charlotte Water’s official website displays a Stage 2 mandatory water-restriction notice as of this review. Restrictions can change, so consult the city’s current water conservation and drought notices before watering lawns, filling pools or using large amounts of outdoor water.
